If you think you may have cystitis there are now excellent home test kits you can buy via the internet. This will put your mind at rest knowing whether you have cystitis or not. Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) can affect men and women. Cystitis is very common with women especially during their reproductive years. If you have any signs of cystitis such as going to the toilet to urinate more than usual, pain or a burning feeling when urinating, you could possibly have a urinary tract infection. Bacteria are the common cause of cystitis as well as sexual intercourse. Always make sure you empty your bladder fully too each time you go to the bathroom. An empty bladder is a healthy bladder.

Symptoms of cystitis or urinary tract infections can develop quickly or over a period of time. Symptoms include:-

  • Having to visit the toilet more than usual
  • Having pain just above the pubic bone
  • Pain in the lower back
  • Having to get up through the night to urinate
  • Urine being cloudy and often having blood present

All you need is a midstream urine specimen

You may not always have symptoms. If your bladder isn’t functioning properly, maybe due to nerve damage, cystitis could develop along with a kidney infection and fever. This is where a test kit is invaluable. Results will show you a negative or positive result in a short space of time. Diagnosis and prevention of UTI/cystitis If you have any of the above symptoms, diagnosis of urinary tract infections or cystitis is easy to do. All you need is a midstream urine specimen. This is tested to see if any nitrites are present that are released by bacteria. The cystitis test can also detect enzymes that are found in particular white blood cells called leukocyte esterase. These enzymes show that your body is trying to get rid of any bacteria that may be present. If you’ve had a fever for three days, think your kidneys may be damaged, or have recurring urinary tract infections over three times each year, take a cystitis test.

Suggestions to prevent the occurrence of UTI or cystitis are:-

  • Avoid using diaphragms or spermicides when having sex
  • Women should try and urinate immediately after sexual intercourse
  • Women who are postmenopausal could benefit from estrogen creams being applied to the vulva
  • Estrogen suppositories
  • It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids as this helps to flush out bacteria from the bladder

UTI Cystitis

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are extremely common in the elderly, babies and women. The bacteria Escherichia coli or E. coli, which lives in the bowel and digestive system, can travel to the bladder, kidneys or urethra. Approximately one in twenty men and one in two women get a UTI in their lifetime. The symptoms are uncomfortable but not life threatening.
