The menopause is a normal condition that women go through as they get older. It describes the many changes your body experiences just before or after menstruation stops. It also marks the end of your reproductive cycle. Menopause occurs when the ovaries stop releasing eggs. This can happen as a woman reaches the age of 40 or older. It can also be a hereditary thing. If your mother reached menopause at 50, it could also happen to you when you are the same age. To know if you are going through the menopause, a home test kit will give you the answers.

  • Menopause can also happen when:-
  • Women have a hysterectomy
  • The removal of the womb and other reproductive organs
  • There has been damage to the ovaries, from chemotherapy for instance

....going through “the change”, as menopause is also known as.

There are three stages to the menopause:-

1. Perimenopause – this is when the ovaries make less estrogen and can last right up until menopause.

2. Menopause – if it’s over a year after you had your last period, this is a sure fire sign of the menopause.

3. Post menopause – women may experience hot flushes due to the lack of estrogen in their body.

Symptoms of the menopause Symptoms can be quite varied from woman to woman. You may sweat more than usual and go through:-

  • Mood swings
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Sleeplessness
  • Irritability
  • Headaches

Joint and muscle aches, vaginal dryness and bladder problems can also be symptoms. You might feel as though your heart is beating much faster than normal. It’s advisable to keep a chart or diary with the dates of your periods and when they stopped. This will give you a good idea of whether or not you are going through “the change”, as menopause is also known as.

Menopause can cause risks in some women, but usually it just comes and goes so you can get on with your life. Do be aware that osteoporosis, heart disease, bladder and bowel problems along with wrinkling of the skin and weak vision can be caused by the menopause. Test results will indicate if you are experiencing menopausal symptoms and how you feel is not something more serious. Some women just sail through the menopause with no symptoms at all, they are the lucky ones! Others may put on weight, see hair growth on their upper lip, chest, abdomen or chin.
