Peddling cures and “snake oil,” was widely practiced in the 19th century and today we have many systems in place to try and prevent people promoting treatments and remedies for all sorts of ailments without clear proof of results or health benefit. False advertising and claims that a drug or device can do things not proven, are still a problem, and pretend miracle cures are being sold today. This is why the scientific world and regulators have certain methods and policies to abide by and follow to help the real treatments become available. This can unfortunately make research move more slowly but the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Before we can use a treatment or remedy it must first be discovered and produced of course! There are a number of stages and processes products must go through before they can be used on humans and then used on a mass scale. There is a specific path that is followed and by which discoveries are then turned in to new treatments and medicines. This path and the steps taken assure us that the treatments and remedies are effective and safe. It is all well and good to say something works in the scientific laboratory but what about when it gets to animals or humans?

...it may be shown that it works well in an animal but not necessarily in a human

Scientists are educated on the “the scientific method” which goes as follows:

  1. Ask a question
  2. Background research
  3. Come up with a hypothesis, a proposed explanation for the question
  4. Test the hypothesis in a manner in which you can either prove or disprove the hypothesis
  5. Analyze the results of the testing
  6. Make a conclusion

These steps may not be taken in this exact order and some of the steps may need to be repeated within the process but these principles are what scientists have to gain new knowledge and question their research objectively. These steps also allow the scientists to collaborate with other scientists who can study and retest so that the scientists’ methods and conclusions can be confirmed or added to. They may find that a treatment or remedy helps the symptoms of a disease or injury in humans, but that it carries too many risks. Medical devices, treatments and strategies all come under the scrutiny of laws and regulations, especially when they need to go to clinical trial which means when they can start to be tested on humans.

The preclinical trial period is when these items are tested on animals and lab grown human and animal tissues. Sometimes at this stage it may be shown that it works well in an animal but not necessarily in a human which is why such high importance is placed on clinical trials.

These clinical trials always start with minimal people to test for safety so if you are considering a clinical trial for you or someone else, always do your own research of the company and the product first. Always ask lots of questions and find out if there has been approval for clinical trials to go ahead. After all, a treatment or a remedy is defined in the Dictionary as “something that cures or relieves a disease or bodily disorder; a healing medicine, application, or treatment” and that is most certainly what you want to be getting.
