Probably the least discussed but very important test to be talked about because of its odious subject is the stool or fecal occult test. A stool test is most commonly performed to provide discovery of problems in the digestive tract, liver and certain enzymes in the pancreas. If you have symptoms of the digestive tract such as gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever or cramping, a stool test is performed to search for various bacteria, fungi or viruses. This test can also find parasites in your stool or worms like Giardia.

One of the most aggressive and widespread disease found in the digestive tract is bowel, colon or rectal cancer and a stool test can pick up trace compounds relating to the disease. Also, if the body is not absorbing nutrients from the food you eat, you may have malabsorption syndrome or a deficiency that stool testing will be used to uncover.

...inflammation in the gastrointestinal system is usually cause for a stool test.

You must have good digestion to maintain good health. Your body must be able to absorb nutrients, rid itself of toxins and excrete waste properly. Undigested food will remain in the intestinal tract and affect the digestion process causing illness, immune problems and nutritional deficiencies. Conditions such as leaky gut syndrome can also occur where the areas of the gut that control what passes through the lining of our intestine don’t work properly which is linked to substances leaking into the bloodstream.

Any inflammation in the gastrointestinal system is usually cause for a stool test and is actually one of the most common reasons for patients seeing a doctor or deciding to get a test. If you are going to do a stool test, try to avoid medicines like antacids, antibiotics, laxatives, Vitamin C, aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, diarrhea medication and antiparasite meds for one to two weeks before the test.

If you are concerned about blood in the stool and want to test for this avoid foods like red meat, cantaloupe, raw broccoli, turnip, radish, horseradish for three days prior also. Also do not test while you have your menstrual period or are bleeding from hemorrhoids.

The Stool Test at Home:-

If you are doing a stool test at home it is important that it does not become contaminated. Always urinate before the test, try to wear gloves or have well washed hands as you do not want to spread infection. You will have a clean sample cup and applicator sticks if required and so make sure not to have these come in to contact with anything else and make sure your actual stool does not come in to contact with the toilet itself.

No one said it was going to be easy to grab that sample! Some people even tape a plastic bag over the seat to catch their sample. Innovative! The gut is our biggest immune organ and a lot is still not known about it. What is known is that diet, medications and stress can all play a big role in affecting it. If you are having gut problems consult your health professional and get a stool test. Your tummy will thank you.
