Hair analysis has been used for over 30 years in everything from criminal forensics to testing for long term drug use. Hair analysis cannot test for current substances in the body like blood, saliva and urine does. Old hair away from the scalp would not be indicative of someone’s current lifestyle and their environmental factors. Body hair can also be tested if head hair is not available. The hair is generally taken from the back of the neck or near the scalp at the roots if hair content could be affected by exposure to various substances such as shampoos, bleaches and hair dyes.

When you ingest drugs, it goes into the hair follicle

To test for heavy metals and toxins, most patients will be asked to cut and provide a sample of hair that has not had any treatment for at least 8 weeks and not to use dandruff or medicated shampoos for at least 2 weeks. These products and practices can affect a results outcome. Your hair can be tested for the following:-

  • Heavy metals toxicity
  • Drug use
  • Mineral analysis
  • DNA

Some alternative health companies may promote or offer hair analysis however having your hair analyzed for common vitamins, minerals, or other nutrients has not been 100% proven to work or provide accurate results.

Chemicals are used to clean the hair before testing and there is much debate on whether water soluble traces like vitamins and minerals survive this process. Hair tests are most commonly used to measure more long term results, usually the last 90 days to a year but depending on how much of the substance being tested for you are consuming or have in your system, they can still detect this.

When you ingest drugs, it goes into the hair follicle, and then into the strands themselves, where they stay long term. The five drug classes which are usually tested as proposed by the Federal Government are Methamphetamine (Methamphetamine/Amphetamine & Ecstasy), Marijuana, Opiates (Codeine, Morphine & 6-Monacteyl Morphine), Cocaine (Cocaine & Benzoylecgonine), and Phencyclidine (PCP). Some of the other drugs that can be tested for are date rape drugs, alcohol and tricyclic antidepressants.

Although chemicals and bleaches used on the hair may lower the level of drugs found in the hair it does not completely remove the evidence of use. Analysis of hair is preferred in some cases as a preliminary screening method for toxic substances detrimental to health after exposure to air, dust, sediment, soil and water, food and toxins in the environment.

Hair analysis or “Forensic testing of hair” as it is also called is widely used in autopsies, to determine drug abuse, accidental poisoning, and criminal activity and to determine DNA. And you can now use this incredible science in your own home.

It has become a very useful tool to determine timelines for many different substances in the body and can also be used in conjunction with other testing methods to tell a whole story.

Hair Folicle Test

Hair Follicle testing gives a more long term record of what passes through your body than either blood or urine tests. Each hair lives for around 5-6 years before it falls out. Hair analysis is the scientific examination of a hair sample which can be one hair taken from a crime scene or hair taken from the back of your head and then sent to a laboratory where it can be tested for drug use or health conditions. Modern methods are so sensitive that even traces of drugs or minerals are a picogram or one thousandth of a nanogram to one gram of hair.
