Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease which anyone can get. It’s a virus that has mild symptoms. There are two types of viruses, HSV-1, simplex type 1 and HSV-2, simplex type 2. Genital herpes spreads by having sex with a person who already has the disease. Herpes is a visible sore usually in the genital area. You may have oral herpes which are cold sores that appear around the face or mouth which can be painful and itchy. This disease spreads through direct contact from person to person. The virus stays in the body forever with symptoms that can come and go. If you think you may have herpes, for your peace of mind, use a herpes home test kit.

  • To reduce the risk If you are sexually active, the following can lower the risk of getting herpes:-
  • Staying in a long term monogamous relationship
  • Making sure your partner has been tested for the disease and been tested negative
  • Using condoms every time you have sex. It can’t be stressed enough to practice safe sex especially if you have herpes.

Medicines which are taken daily can shorten or prevent outbreaks

Statistics have shown that all STDs can increase the risk of getting HIV. Those people with genital herpes are the most susceptible and likely to pass the disease on to their partner. Whether you’re a man or woman, you can get genital herpes. If you’re pregnant and have herpes, don’t forget to go to your hospital for prenatal care. Your doctor should be told you have or have been exposed to herpes. Having this disease can lead to miscarriage and the baby can be born too early. It can also be passed on to the fetus.

You may not be aware of the mild symptoms of genital herpes. These can include:-

  • Blisters around the genitals, rectum and mouth
  • Flu like aches, fever or swollen glands
  • Burning feeling when going to the toilet
  • Inability to urinate

There’s no cure for genital herpes although it can be extremely well managed these days. Carrying out a home test will let you know one way or another if you have in fact got the disease. Medicines which are taken daily can shorten or prevent outbreaks, making it less likely to pass herpes on to your partner or partners. Another factor in how to reduce the risk of spreading genital herpes is not to touch the sores or fluids from the sores. You could transfer the disease to other parts of your body. Having a suppressed immune system along with herpes can be very distressing. Make sure to wash hands to help avoid spreading the disease.
