Details

Radon occurs naturally from decay underneath the Earth's surface. Radon gas comes up through the soil and via holes, drain pipes and cracks and enters buildings and their water supply. You cannot see, taste or smell this radioactive gas which is found in around 1 in 15 homes in the United States and is said to be fatal for an estimated 20,000 people every year. Using well water in your home or office means you should test with a professional Radon in Water Test Kit regularly.

Whether you have been affected depends on the radon levels in your office or home and how long you may have been exposed for. It can also be influenced by whether you are a smoker or have ever been exposed to tobacco smoke. However, radon gas causes lung cancer in non-smokers and severe respiratory problems in individuals as the radon gas has radioactive particles that become stuck in the lungs. As these particles deteriorate they release radiation in to the live tissue of the lungs.

To decrease the risk of exposure try to do the following:

  • Keep vents to crawl spaces open
  • Minimize time spent in low areas such as your basement
  • Increase the circulation of outside air into your home or office
  • Discourage cigarette smoking in your home or office
  • Once you have tested your home or office, you can then make any changes necessary to protect you and your family from further exposure to radon.

If you have any of the following in your home, you may be breathing in this radioactive gas:

  • Cinder-block, brick or rock wall
  • An open sump pump hole or floor drain
  • Spaces between walls and floors
  • Exposed soil in the basement or foundation
  • Cracks in the basement wall or foundation
  • Exposed pipes or loose pipe fittings
