What can a liver function test tell you? The liver is one of the major organs of the body, and it’s also one of the most important. The liver is the hub of detoxification in your body; it’s responsible for separating the wheat from the chaff, and more importantly, the toxic chemicals that are passing through you from the nutrients that you need to survive. Think of the liver like a purification plant. That’s why it’s important that you protect your liver, and take immediate action if you think that you might be experiencing liver problems.

What is Liver Disease?

The liver, as we mentioned above, is important because it helps with removing toxins from your body, as well as regulating blood flow – causing blood to clot and making sure that it is cleaned. Liver disease comes in several forms, depending on exactly what damage the liver has taken, but basically liver disease in all its forms is the diminished capacity of the liver to execute its function.

At its worst, Liver Disease causes Liver Failure. This tends to happen over a longer term, but can happen quickly if the damage to the liver dramatically worsens in a short space of time. Liver disease can be caused by a range of things. Notable causes of liver disease which are preventable by regulating aspects of your lifestyle are:

  • Obesity – if you are overweight, you put more stress on your system. Also, obesity tends to be a result of eating processed foods, some of which will contain less-than-ideal toxins and harmful chemical ingredients.
  • Alcoholism – This is the major cause of liver disease in the Western World. Alcohol is a toxin, and your liver will get scarring and damage if it has to work too hard to cleanse the blood of alcohol. An undiagnosed hepatitis infection can also cause liver damage.

Liver disease is very difficult to pick up until it’s in the later stages, where it starts having a more obvious effect. Signs that you have liver disease can be jaundice, loss of appetite, and heavy weight loss.
