Having a food intolerance or sensitivity is very prevalent and common. It is believes that one particular intolerance, lactose intolerance, is so prevalent that around 75% of adults are affected and may not even know it. As we stop producing the enzyme lactase, the enzyme that breaks lactose down, at around two years of age, most adults are said to be affected with no obvious symptoms. Some food sensitivity is inherited through a family line and can passed on to your children. Gluten sensitivity is one such intolerance where this is particularly seen. The same sensitivity in family members can also show different symptoms. It is very difficult to diagnose food intolerances as the reaction to the food can happen some 48 hours after the food is consumed. Testing at home or at the clinic is said to be just as effective as the “Elimination Diet Method” where all suspected reactive foods are eliminated and slowly introduced back in t the system to see which substance may be causing a physiological reaction.

A food intolerance may not be noticed until someone is much older.

Not the same as food allergies. Food intolerance, or non-allergic food hypersensitivity, is a delayed reaction to a substance in a certain foods however it is not the body’s immune system reacting to it as with a food allergy. An intolerance can mean you have certain chemicals or enzymes missing in your system, which mean they are not there to break down or digest certain foods. If this is the case you may not be absorbing the nutrients from those foods properly and this can cause malnutrition in effect. Short term this food intolerance can cause unpleasant digestive problems or skin reactions. Long term you can have serious illness and chronic symptoms occur. Some of the symptoms we tend to feel with a food sensitivity and just tolerate in daily life are itching skin, diarrhea, tiredness, coughing, mouth ulcers, stiff joints, stomach bloating or a sore back and headaches.

The Food Intolerance Test at Home:-

A simple saliva test can be done at home to uncover any food intolerance you may have. The main intolerances tested for are soy, egg, gluten and milk (lactose). All you need to do is use the swab from your test kit and wipe the inside of your cheek and then place the sample in to the collection envelope and pop it in the post! Simple!

And as symptoms are ongoing and consistent, most people treat the symptom without realizing the cause. A food intolerance may not be noticed until someone is much older as when we are children or young adults, our bodies tolerate certain foods much better as symptoms may be less prominent our metabolism may be faster. Tolerance for these foods may decrease as we age and symptoms start to increase. It may be surprising to start having symptoms and then find out you have a food intolerance however there are many things including age that can trigger a food intolerance.

Stress from many things in life is a major contributor to the sudden onset of food intolerance symptoms after the body has been coping for so long. A shocking life event or stressful period in your life can promote the onset of this insensitivity.
